As that legendary torch is lit, all eyes will be watching the greatest athletes the entire world has to offer.  From bobsledding, skiing, skating, the 2010 Winter Olympics showcases the best of the best, competing for perhaps the greatest prize of all, to honor their countries.    Nick Baumgartner is a no stranger to competition.  The 29 year old from Iron River, Michigan was an All-American and Michigan state champion wrestler, all-state football player, running track and playing baseball in high school.  He continued playing football while attending Northern Michigan University, and also drives demolition cars.  Baumgartner is also a father to five year old Landon, who enjoys joining his dad on the slopes.

Nick Baumgartner joined the US Olympic team in the snowboard cross event, or SBX.  SBX is a high octane event in which 4-6 athletes race against each other, encountering various jumps and obstacles, with speeds up to 60 miles per hour.  He is the reigning bronze medalist in the World Championships and had 2 2nd place finishes in World Cups in 2009.  Other accolades include winning the USASA Nationals in 2004 and the Visa U.S. SBX Championship in 2007.  Baumgartner will represent the United States Olympic snowboarding team in Vancouver under the leadership of Coach Peter Foley, with a qualifying and medal events on Monday the 15th.

Opening ceremonies for the 2010 Winter Olympics begin Friday the 12th, and the hearts and hopes of the United States will be with Nick Baumgartner, encouraging him in his quest for the gold.

Landon Baumgartner and his kindergarten class will still be very proud of dad Nick Baumgartner.  Not only did he have a great performance in the preliminary SBX rounds, but with a touching tribute to his son, Baumgartner jumped into the spotlight at the 2010 Winter Olympics and grabbed the world’s attention.

Snowboard cross is not only an extremely difficult sport to master, but it is one of the newest events in the winter Olympics, only its 2nd year in the competition.  Inclement weather conditions and extreme nerves added to the high pressure sport, and with a wipeout in the first round of the elimination heats, Baumgartner saw his Olympic dreams shattered.  The US SBX Team took another hit when Graham “Unicorn and Rainbows” Watanabe was eliminated in a close call with Alex Pullin of Australia.  However, the US SBX Team did prevail, with Seth Wescott garnering his 2nd gold.  The silver medal went to Mike Robertson of Canada and the bronze to Tony Ramoin of France.  Fellow USA Teammate Nate Holland finished 4th, Baumgartner finished 7th in the qualifying round and 20th overall.

No way have we seen the last of this multi-talented athlete.  Baumgartner plans to race trucks this summer and continue hunting snakes and frogs with young Landon.  We can be sure to see him plowing onto the scene at the 2012 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.  This spirited single father may not have gotten the gold, but he won the hearts of the nation.

Baumgartner will take part in the next stage of Olympic qualifications during the FIS Snowboard World Cup in Telluride, Colo., Dec. 17 to 20.
Baumgartner is one of 11 members of the U.S. men’s snowboardcross team, but only four of them will qualify for Winter Olympics team that will compete in Vancouver in February. The event in Telluride is the second of five SBX qualification events.
The first was held in Chapelco, Argentina, on Sept. 12. Baumgartner finished 11th in that event, the third best American, behind Seth Westcott and Graham Watanabe, who were second and third, respectively.
SBX qualifications take place Dec. 18, and the Visa U.S. Snowboardcross Cup is on Dec. 19. A team SBX exhibition is set for Dec. 20.
NBC will telecast the Visa Snowboardcross Cup event on Dec. 26 at 12:30 p.m. Central Time. The cable network Versus, which is carried on the Iron River cable system, broadcasts the snowboardcross event on Jan. 3 at 3 p.m. CT.

He’ll have to wait until Monday’s official announcement, but it appears Nick Baumgartner has wrapped up the fourth and final U.S. Olympic berth in men’s snowboardcross for the Vancouver Games.
Baumgartner placed 11th in Thursday’s final Olympic qualifier in Stoneham, Quebec. The Iron River native was third in the SBX World Cup event Jan. 15 in Switzerland.
"I have the fourth spot," Baumgartner told the Free Press by phone tonight.
Baumgartner, 27, is ranked third in the U.S. and fourth in the world in snowboardcross. He won a bronze medal at last year’s world championships.
The four-member Olympic team officially will be named Monday, according to U.S. Snowboarding.
