Instead of feeling slighted by attending his first Olympic press conference and learning his name tag was wrong, Nick Baumgartner var hb4 = new HelpBalloon({dataURL: '/athletes/athlete=13413/library/_flyout.html'}); was honored. Nick Baumgartner isn't an Olympic Hall of Famer quite yet.   Whether it was a joke or an honest mistake, his name tag read "Bruce Baumgartner," the name of a four-time Olympic wrestling medalist that is in the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. Nick was also a wrestler, a high school All-American and Michigan state champion. "I'll take that any day of the week," the snowboarder said about being called Bruce.

The Iron River, MI native will kick off his Olympic experience tomorrow, February 2nd, when Baumgartner appears on the NBC national broadcast of the Today Show. The first-time Olympian, along with Kaylin Richardson of the US Ski Team, will join Polo Ralph Lauren CEO David Lauren during the 8:30 AM segment to debut the PRL Opening Ceremony clothing to be worn by the 2010 US Olympic Team.

"I have the fourth spot," Baumgartner told the Free Press by phone tonight.

VEYSONNAZ, Switzerland -- Nick Baumgartner has put himself in the running to make the U.S. Olympic team with a third-place finish in a World Cup snowboardcross event.

"Today was a blast. I knew I had three good races in me," Holland said. "Baumgartner did a great job getting me out of the gate in either first or second." "It's pretty cool, this team event," Holland, a five-time X Games gold medalist added. "I was Baumgartner's biggest fan today. I'd watch him go out of the gate, root for him as much as I could, and then it was time for me to put up my end of the bargain."

To those who know him well, it was no surprise when Nick Baumgartner chose to spend the majority of his time close to home this fall to prepare for his attempt to make the 2010 U.S. Olympic team in snowboardcross.

 Nick Baumgartner of the U.S. (red) won a bronze medal at the 2009 Worlds and finished third in last season's overall World Cup standings. 

With athletes already landing on snowboard World Cup podiums this fall, U.S. Snowboarding revealed its 2010 roster which is highlighted by Olympic gold medalists Kelly Clark (Mt. Snow, VT), Hannah Teter (Belmont, VT) and Seth Wescott (Sugarloaf, ME).

It’s still pretty balmy in North America, but down South, it’s a whole ‘nother story. It’s winter, and the 2009/2010 season has begun.

The first Olympic qualifying events are on tap this weekend in South America.

World Cup snowboardcross champion Lindsey Jacobellis (Stratton Mountain, VT) nailed down her fifth World Cup win of the season. Jacobellis was joined on the podium by fellow U.S. snowboarder Nick Baumgartner (Iron River, MI) who was second.
