Ask Nick

Huge fan bro..My question is, If it wasn’t for snowboarding what do you think you’d doing?
By Jordan From Glen Falls , NY
"Thanks man appreciate all the support...Prob still doing concrete union work but I am super pumped that I get to do something that I enjoy and I think that everyone should find something they love and work as hard as it takes to be able to do it. You only get one chance at life so enjoy it. I also plan to start racing trucks in the spring of 2010. Like I said Live Life, and Love Life."
I read on your site that you 5 year old son Landon is getting started in snowboarding and skiing, do you ever find yourself having to choose between being a snowboarder and being a father?
By Caitlin From Burlington,
"Thanks for checking out the site Caitlin...Sometimes it does get extremely hard for me to leave him. I miss him so much when I am on the road and when I talk to him after I have been gone a couple weeks I can tell he is starting to really miss me and wants me back home. The snowboarding has given me an amazing amount of time to hang with him in the summer though. I mean catching snakes, frogs and he is amazing at catching chipmunks with a box propped up with a stick and a string. The chipmunks get free food so they put up with Landon catching them about 6 times a day!"
I heard through the grapevine that you big in Mammouth(no pun intended), What is it about Mammouth, CA that makes it your favorite place to ride?
By C.J. From Mammouth,
"HAHA...I like Mammouth because it was the first place I went outside of the Midwest and they really know how to make some big jumps and they have great rails. I haven’t been back in a while but I look forward to making it there again very soon. It was also the site of mu first boardercross nationals. I won the first two heats but in the semi finals I was in the lead and got ran into and knocked off coarse. I then almost missed my small finals race because I didn’t know I got to race one more time. I won that heat and took 5th."
Just wanted to know why out of all the different types of snowboarding out there what drew you to boardercross?
By Ryan From Boulder,
"I have always been a freestyle rider, I love rails and big jumps that scare me. Boardercross gave me a chance to go as fast as I could go and hit huge jumps but also add three riders right along with me. To me this was a huge rush that I could not pass up. I started racing boardercross and found that I was pretty good and had so much fun on while racing. I knew that if I worked as hard as I could to learn all the technical ends, combine that with my competitive nature, then I had a future and one that I would enjoy."
Hey Nick I am a huge fan I was wondering what do you think is going to be the obstacle you need to overcome to achieve your goal of winning the gold in 2010?
By Kevin From ,
"Thanks for the love Kevin...There is just so many great riders and lots of thing out on the course that are out of your control. I just know I need to work as hard as I possibly can and do everything in my power to be the best and most prepared I can and come out and ride like I can. No corners can be cut and I need to keep riding like I have been and enjoy the ride J"
Is there any downside to the growing popularity of snowboarding in the U.S.?
By Kenny From ,
"No I don’t think so, the bigger this sport can get the better. I love snowboarding and what it has brought to my life, so I want nothing but great things to happen and this sport to keep growing. The more fun sports that people can pick from to get out and be active the better. "
What single event in snowboarding do you consider to be your biggest accomplishment?
By John From ,
"I would have to say my World Cup victory in Lake placid in 2008. I went to Placid ranked 4th in the National championship. Had some great runs during training the day before time trials. After trials I was qualified 2nd. During finals I won the first two heats racing super hard and aggressive taking some real inside lines in the corners for passes. Won the semi finals but a malfunctioning gate for fellow team member Jonathan Cheever cause a rerun. I just kept my intesody and race my race and came out with the win. Finals I won the whole shot and held the lead right to my first World Cup victory. With the win that day I also cinched the Visa US National Championship. Following the award ceremony I decided to compete in the Paul Mitchel Progression Session. The event was a snowmobile tow in at a big air jump located in the infield of the Olympic oval from the 1980 Winter Olympic games in Lake Placid, NY. I went on to take second with a frontside cork 900 and a Switch Backside cork 720. Was a great day and felt great and I know all the hard work was paying off."
Staying in shape and training is a big part of your off season, can you tell about your unusual training method?
By Nick From Phila,
"I like incorporate drills from football. Explosive drills that I truly enjoy so that it is easier to do more and not quit on myself. When I am back in the Upper Peninsula I train by myself and have to find away to push myself. If I don’t find drills that are fun and enjoyable it will make it easier to cut the workout a little short. When trying get one of those sports for the Olympics in Feb, cheating myself is unacceptable. I am out at the USSA (US Snowboard and Ski Teams) Facility in Park city Utah. I will be getting some amazing workouts in out of the gym as well as in the gym with trainer Tschana Breslin. "
